Showcasing the potential of Renewable Liquid Gas– bioLPG – in heating

Europe’s push for net-zero emissions by 2050 faces challenges in decarbonising heating in rural areas. Renewable liquid gas (rLG), like bioLPG, offers a lower-carbon solution that integrates with existing infrastructure and combined with energy efficiency measures, cuts emissions cost-effectively. Liquid Gas Europe’s Building Energy Everywhere Project showcases this potential, highlighting renewable liquid gas’s, like bioLPG, role in a seamless energy transition and the industry’s commitment to sustainability.

ADEM de Vlasselaar: A Model for Sustainable Energy Transition

For our first Building Energy Everywhere Showcase, we selected ADEM de Vlasselaar, a care home in Rotselaar, Belgium, near Brussels. With support from Antargaz, ADEM transitioned from fossil LPG to bioLPG in 2023, achieving over a 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions without requiring costly investment. In 2024, we further enhanced the building’s performance by obtaining an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) and conducting an energy audit, which offered valuable insights. To build on these findings, we installed advanced monitoring systems to track real-time energy use and indoor environmental quality (IEQ). These tools include:

  • Two smart gas meters, one for each bioLPG tank.
  • Two smart electricity submeters.
  • Seven IEQ sensors.

By tracking energy use and environmental conditions, these systems enable ongoing efficiency improvements, optimise the impact of bioLPG, and uphold the efficiency first principle-a cornerstone of sustainable energy transitions.

As an industry we believe this Showcase demonstrates our common vision and approach towards decarbonisation and defossilisation of building in the future. Different communities require different energy sources. BioLPG can provide a rapid, effective, and accessible reduction of CO2 emissions in rural and off-grid buildings.

What is bioLPG?

BioLPG is propane produced from renewable feedstocks such as virgin vegetable oils and used cooking oil, other un-segregated fats, oils and greases, and animal fat and tallow. BioLPG is currently a by-product from the HVO/HEFA process that produces Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) or Renewable Diesel, although there are other processes under development where bioLPG may be the main product in the production process; it is also referred to as renewable propane and biopropane.

The biolPG supplied to the showcase site is a certified fuel that meets the 60% GHG emission saving criteria required by the Renewable Energy Directive (RED), for plant operating before 1st January 2021. The Mass Balance Approach used by the distributor to assure the supply of bioLPG to the showcase site is crucial for the scaling up of renewable fuel consumption in Europe, as it allows for a flexible, efficient transition without requiring a separate infrastructure for renewable fuels.
